Friday, March 13, 2009 - Farm Leadership Council holds Annual Meeting and Conference
On March 12 and 13, 2009, the Farm Leadership Council (FLC) held its annual meeting and conference “Bridging Risk To Opportunity” in Regina, SK. The event, which brought over 200 producers from across the Prairies, explored the financial, environmental and human resource risks for western Canadian farmers.  The conference was partially sponsored by the Advancing Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food SK (ACAAFS) Program, through the Agriculture Council of Saskatchewan (ACS).

“Given the volatility of the markets in 2008, this conference really focused on how we can best manage these risks,” said FLC chairman Wayne Truman. “All producers are looking for ways to manage risks for the coming crop year as they make production and marketing decisions, and integrate profitable innovations and long-term planning into their farm operations.”

Keynote speakers included Jay Parsons and Jeffrey Tranel, Colorado State University, RightRisk Team, who gave an overview of whole farm risk management and tools that can be used to assess what level of risk is right for each producer.  Mayo Schmidt, CEO Viterra touched on the challenges and opportunities the industry is facing and provided an overview of global fundamentals that are creating strong long-term demand for Western Canada’s agricultural commodities. Dave Reimann, Informa Economics, provided a grain marketing overview on cereals, oilseeds and specialty crops and Dr. Tim Ball, renowned environmental consultant outlined environmental issues that are influencing the agricultural industry and noted that farmers have done a good job of adapting.  Dr. Ball stressed the importance of food production, “There are no farms in the cities, but no cities without farms.” Brent VanKoughnet, Agri Skills Inc; Kris Mayerle, 2008 Saskatchewan Outstanding Young Farmer; and Keith LePoudre, First Nations Agricultural Council of Saskatchewan discussed human resource issues, best practices and offered suggestions to the audience about training, finding and keeping employees. Mr. Maury Harvey also provided an over view of AAFC risk management suite of programs.

Friday, Jay Parsons and Jeffrey Tranel led the group through a full day risk workshop, providing a number of practical tools that can use on their farms.

The FLC Board of Directors re-elected Mr. Wayne Truman from Weyburn membership area as Chairman of the Board for the 2009-2010 fiscal year.  The Board also elected Mr. Randy Penner from Winnipeg area as Vice-Chair and Mr. John Bumbac from Moose Jaw area as the Executive member. Other directors elected to the Board in the following areas are: Wayne Husak, Brandon; Earl Campbell, Kindersley; Harj Hari, Lethbridge; Cecil Opheim, Melfort; Terry Oleksyn, North Battleford; Wayne Anderson, Raymore; Gary Hanson, Saskatoon; Ted Sells, Swift Current; Dave Rainforth (acting), Trochu; Eric Gutsch, Vermilion; Trent Crow, Yorkton; Ed Gaudet, Edmonton and Gilbert Owens, Peace River.  The Board of Directors will lead the organization to fulfill its vision of “Improving the Business of Farming.”

FLC is a producer led organization whose focus is on providing educational training opportunities to help producers maximize the value of their operations.  It supports producer innovation and leadership in prairie communities through professional development initiatives.
